Make website action easy

Do you know what the primary goal for your website is? What action do you want visitors to do?

Not everyone knows the answer to those questions. But even if you do know the answer, ask yourself this: How easy is it for people to take that action?

At a very high level, the goal of all online marketing should be to get others to do four things:

  1. Know your organization
  2. Like your organization
  3. Trust your organization
  4. Value your organization

Once they do all four of those things, you want them to take action! So you need to make that as easy as possible for them.

Pick one primary action you want users to take. It may be to connect with you on social media, to sign up for your email newsletter, or to call your phone. Whatever the case, pick one thing.

Next, working within whatever system your website is built on, get the button, the phone number, or the sign-up form as close to the top right of every page as possible.

Why should it be there? Think about how most countries read: Left to right, top to bottom. People that read that way start looking at websites at the top left, then move to the right before looking further down on the page.

That’s why a lot of sites have the logo at the top left, so people immediately know what organization’s website they’re looking at. And that’s why the main action you want them to take should be on the top right. That makes it the second thing they see, right after the confirmation that they’re looking at the right website.
