Where can you use hashtags?

If you want to start using hashtags, you’ve probably noticed it can be a bit confusing at first. Which social media websites support them? And are people actually using them on all those sites?

Knowing the answer to both of these questions is important, especially if you post the same content automatically on multiple platforms.

Whether you’re using Hootsuite, Zapier, or posting something to Instagram and also sharing it on Facebook and Twitter, it’s important to know where hashtags are actually used and where they aren’t.

First, let’s take a look at the major social media sites with hashtag support:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Google+
  • Pinterest
  • Instagram
  • YouTube

Great! Seems like that’s all the major social networks, right?

Whoah, not so fast, buddy. Yes, technically all of those sites listed above support hashtags. But in reality, on some of those platforms they either look weird or just aren’t used by most people.

Specifically, at this point, I only recommend using them on the following social media sites:

  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • Instagram

How did I come up with that list? Well, first of all, I am a professional. But second, just take a look at your feed (or home page) on each of those sites. On the ones I excluded, you probably won’t see many hashtags.

Tim is a much bigger LinkedIn expert than I am, so I asked him about that platform. He said that hashtags may be catching on, but it’s too soon to tell for sure. Tim said the rule of thumb is to avoid using them for now.

And there you go! Now you can avoid embarrassing yourself, and use hashtags where they’re appropriated. What can I say except #YoureWelcome?
