Win a free geeky t-shirt!

This summer I had the amazing opportunity to contribute a t-shirt design to the geeky Harry Potter convention LeakyCon.

This was my third year to go to LeakyCon, and already it was shaping up to be the best one yet.

It all started out with a design contest in July.

How It Happened

The design contest only had a few rules: make it geeky, awesome, and fandom-inclusive.

Now, if you aren’t familiar with the term fandom, it basically refers to the collective communities of people who love different stuff. For instance, Tim is a part of the Superman and Star Trek fandoms.

From the moment that they announced the contest, I knew I just had to submit something. All my graphic design skills and been leading me to this point in my life: design a geeky shirt for a geek convention. It was the perfect opportunity.

After a few days of playing with different concepts, I submitted my design, and all that was left to do was wait and see what happened.

Nearly two weeks passed, and the submission period was closed. I was in the midst of piecing together an Ikea desk when I received the email. My design had been chosen as one of the official t-shirts for LeakyCon!

Finally, a couple of weeks later, the announcement was made to the world on LeakyCon’s website.

The artwork features characters from ten different fandoms.

From left to right, we have:

Bug from Starship, the 11th Doctor from Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes from BBC’s Sherlock, Castiel from Supernatural, Harry Potter, Pikachu from Pokemon, Bilbo Baggins from the Hobbit, Hazel Grace Lancaster from the Fault In Our Stars, Captain America, and R2-D2 from Star Wars.

Once I made it to the convention at the end of July, I was able to see hundreds of people wearing the t-shirt I designed. It was definitely a surreal experience.

I even got a picture with one of the co-founders of LeakyCon, Melissa Anelli.

Melissa is an amazing presence in the Harry Potter community, and is the author of the best-selling book Harry, A History.
