How to build connections on LinkedIn quickly

If you’ve spent more than five minutes on LinkedIn, you’ve probably noticed something: some people grow their network like crazy, and others feel like they’re posting into the void.

Here’s the good news: building real, valuable connections on LinkedIn doesn’t have to take forever. And you don’t need hacks, automation tools, or 47 posts a week to make it happen.

What you do need is a simple, human strategy. Let’s walk through it.

Step 1: Fix your profile (this takes 10 minutes)

Most people skip this step, but it’s the fastest way to make sure people actually accept your requests.

Do these four things and you’re already ahead of 80% of users:

  • Use a clear, friendly headshot
  • Write a headline that sounds like a human, not a corporate robot
  • Add a short About section that tells people who you help and how
  • Include one simple call to action (connect, message, visit your site, whatever fits)

Your profile is basically your handshake. Make it a good one.

Step 2: Comment before you post

If you want to grow fast, start by commenting. Yes — before you ever hit “Post.”

Thoughtful comments put your face, name, and personality in front of the right people immediately.

Look for posts from:

  • Clients
  • Referral partners
  • Local businesses
  • Industry experts
  • Anyone you actually want in your network

Your comment should add something. Not “Great post!” Not “So true.” It should be a sentence or two with a perspective, an example, or a question.

Bonus: Commenting consistently is one of the easiest ways to increase profile views.

Step 3: Send smart, personalized connection requests

This is where most people freeze. You don’t need a paragraph or a pitch.

Try something simple:

“Hey ____, we have several mutual connections and I liked your post about ____. Would love to connect.”

Or:

“I see we both work with nonprofits in OKC/Dallas. Figured it made sense to connect.”

Short. Human. Zero pressure. Avoid any message that sounds like it was copied from a LinkedIn coach with too much caffeine.

Step 4: Post consistently (not constantly)

You don’t need to post daily. You don’t even need to post every other day. Two to three posts a week is plenty to grow quickly — especially if you’re commenting in between.

What should you post?

  • Quick business lessons
  • Personal stories that tie back to your work
  • Something you learned from a client conversation
  • A challenge you faced and how you solved it
  • Behind-the-scenes snapshots
  • Industry advice written in normal human language

People don’t want polished perfection. They want honesty and usefulness.

Step 5: Treat LinkedIn DMs like real conversations

Building connections quickly happens here more than anywhere else. But please — no pitching people the second they accept your request. You wouldn’t do that at a networking event. Don’t do it here.

Instead:

  • Ask a question
  • Share a resource
  • Introduce two people who should meet
  • Say something besides “How are you today?”

When you treat people like people, opportunities show up on their own.

A quick story from my side of things

Some of my best client relationships began with a simple comment or message that wasn’t trying to sell anything—just a genuine human connection.

One turned into a conversation. The conversation turned into a coffee meeting. And the coffee meeting turned into years of working together.

That’s the beauty of LinkedIn. Most of the wins don’t come from “strategy” — they come from being present, consistent, and willing to connect like a real person.

You can build connections quickly without being pushy

If you optimize your profile, comment thoughtfully, send personalized requests, and post a couple times a week, you’ll grow steadily — and more importantly, with the right people.
